
Roa Island
Tied to the mainland by a causeway approx. 1 mile in length. to a small
village called Rampside.
Roa Island sports a population of approx. 100, a Public House (The Roa
Island Hotel), a Yacht Club a small cafe at the boat house and a Life Boat
station. A large house which was built for H.W. Schneider (a Furness
industrialist) still stands with a row of 7 cannons pointing out to sea. In
the middle ages Roa Island had strong contacts with the abbots at Furness
Abbey. A Ferry (the landing stage shown below right) can be used to visit
Piel Island and the
castle, viewed from Roa Island.
